Habal-habal Motorcycle

“Habal” is a Bisaya term which means “the sexual (act) intercourse of animals” wherein the male animal enters the female animal by striding at the female’s back. However, in some areas in Visayas and Mindanao, the term “habal” is not only applicable to animals but to human also. In other words, “habal” literally means “sex”.

Now, “habal-habal” is the term used to call the motorcycle taxi because the driver and the passengers are in “habal” (animal) position. The normal motorcycle or motorbike is enough only for a passenger and a driver. But the “habal-habal” motorcycle can carry 2 to 8 passengers.

In some part of Mindanao, the “habal-habal” motorcycle has been installed with the wooden wings as shown in the photo below:

In general, it is still called “habal-habal” motorcycle, but some parts of the province of Surigao del sur call it “shuttle” or “space shuttle”.

Maharlika Highway in Liloan, Dangerous

Riders coming from the northern part of the Philippines who want to visit Mindanao via the Maharlika Highway will pass through the dangerous part of the Maharlika Highway which is found in Liloan, Southern Leyte. I described it as dangerous because you will not expect that some part of the road are defective as shown on the images below. You will not notice this damages while you are in approximately 30 meters away from this part.

Well, if you are using the off-ride sports bike or the big bike, this damaged road might be fine for you. But it’s too dangerous to riders who use underbone bikes or any low-profiled bikes.

And one more reminder… as you reach the town of Libagon, Southern Leyte, it will be good if you reduce your bike’s speed to 50km/hour – 60km/hr because you’ll find lot of damaged part of the highway from this area down to Liloan, Southern Leyte.

Las Vegas Resort Hotel

The Las Vegas Resort Hotel might be not as popular as those resorts found in Tahusan, Hinunangan, Southern Leyte but you’ll find it more interesting.

I accidentally visited the Las Vegas Resort Hotel just this April 2008 when my girlfriend and I roam around the town of Hinunangan in search for the possible venue of our wedding reception. It is located in Barangay Talisay, Hinungan, Southern Leyte… maybe 1/2 to 1 kilometers away from the town proper (going to Silago, Southern Leyte).

The shed houses (others call it Kiosks, and people here in Hinunangan call it cottages) are spacious and good enough for a family-beach gathering.

They also have restaurant or a Karaoke bar where you can eat and enjoy the fun of singing karaoke music. Often times, this place is rented for the reception of wedding, birthday, and other celebration.

The Las Vegas Resort Hotel has nice guest rooms. The Hotel building is located at the back of the karaoke bar. Each of the rooms has 2 bed, 1 refregerator, TV with cable-channels and a bathroom. You can stay here in 24 hours for just PhP1,500.

And if you choose to stay in a room at the second floor of the hotel building, you’ll have the chance to observe the Hinunangan Bay and enjoy looking at the St. Peter and St. Paul islands.

The Las Vegas Resort Hotel of Hinunangan, Southern Leyte has a spacious conference room too wherein you can use for seminar, or even for reception for just PhP3,500 only.

Mangrove Forest, Now a Village

It was reported by the Philippine Information Agency website that the provincial government of Southern Leyte did the mangroves planting in selected areas in Southern Leyte.

… To mitigate the impact of natural disasters, the Provincial Government in close coordination with the GTZ, a German government organization based here established a greenbelt along the coastal areas to highlight the Earth Day celebration on April 22. … the mangroves planting followed along the coastal areas was participated by the Parish Social Action Center, the local government employees, the barangay council members, youths and the coastal communities.

Ms. Abad revealed that the provincial government led by the Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO) and the GTZ allocated 4,000 mangrove seedlings for St. Bernard, 4,000 for the town of Libagon, 2,000 for Hinunangan, 2,000 for Silago and 1,000 mangrove seedlings for Maasin City.

While the celebration was focused in the town of St. Bernard, other municipalities identified also conducted their own activities with the Municipal Agricultural Officer and the ENR Officer concerned, as the lead persons, Abad said. (Source)

What the government did is really commendable. However, it contradicts the truth that the provincial government of Southern Leyte is neglecting the supposed to be “mangrove forest reserve” located in Barangay Itchon, Macrohon, Southern Leyte.

You know, I don’t believe that the officials of the province of Southern Leyte did not notice the emergence of the squatters as shown on the photo below:

I know, they are passing this area every time they travel to the eastern part of the province…. I wonder what really is the reason why they let these squatters ruin our mangroves-reserve.

Purok Mamagan Variety Show

Last April 26, 2008, I watched the Purok Mamagan Variety Show in Barangay Calag-itan, Hinunangan, Southern Leyte. This show was just one of the series of shows that Barangay Calag-itan people did. These shows were supposed to be fund raising of each of the districts or purok of Baranga Calag-itan but the Purok Mamagan council decided to make it free not just to entertain people who watched the show but also to discover the talents of the people of the Purok Mamagan.

Below are the photos took taken during the show:

From Maasin City To Marihatag, Surigao del Sur

I will be going to Marihatag, Surigao del sur to fetch my girl friend and this will be my longest trip for the year 2008. As usual, I will be using my Honda XRM 110 motorcycle.

After posting this post, I will now start my journey. I will first fill my motorcycle tankc with gasoline that will be enough to run from Maasin City to Sogod, Southern Leyte. In Sogod, I will be again filling up the tank to make sure that I can reach Surigao City without emptying the tank. In Surigao City, I will again fill to full the gasoline tank for my journey down south. And my next refilling will be in Butuan City and San Francisco, Agusan Del Sur.

I think, by tomorrow I will be in Marihatag, Surigao del Sur already.

Breakfast at HoneyBee Burgerhaus & Eatery

Living alone in a big apartment unit is quite boring. I wakeup early but then I had no energy to do a thing except playing the Zero Online Game. When I felt hungry, I couldn’t eat immediately because I hadn’t cook food for breakfast. So got no choice but to eat at the restaurant.

I was on my way to the Maasin City proper when I remember my new Kodak C613 Point and Shoot Digital Camera. I thought that it would be good if I could take photo on what I eat on that morning. So, I went back to my apartment, got the digital camera and went straight to HoneyBee Burgerhaus and Eatery.

Well, this is just a trip. The Honeybee Burgerhaus and Eatery management didn’t pay me for featuring their food on this blog, instead I paid them for the food I ate. And that’s the photo below:

Breakfast at Honeybee Eatery

Okay… Philippines is currently on its rice crisis. That’s the reason, I think, why they only served me that amount of rice. That’s a half of a cup, I think. Well… I ordered 3 rice for my breakfast. Yeah…. a cup of rice is not enough for me. Remember I am too big now.

Guso and Fish, both kinilaw were tasty. I loved them. But I was a little bit not contented on the amount of fish kinilaw that they served me. 6 small slices of fish meat? Wow… That’s too much for PhP25.00 ….. lol Kuripot e.

How about softdrink?

Hmmm… I ordered 1 bottle of Sparkle Soda. It’s better than the Cola, Sprite and similar softdrinks that contain Phosphoric Acid which can cause Osteoporosis. Sparkle Soda is a product of Coca-Cola, if I am not mistaken. But it’s purely Soda and Caffeine plus the lemon artificial flavor.

Amparaiso Don’t Need My Money

Just in case you don’t know, Amparaiso is a beach resort in barangay Amparo, Macrohon, Southern Leyte. The term “Amparaiso” is a combination of two terms: Amaparo and Paraiso. Amparo is the name of the barangay while Paraiso is a Visayan term for Paradise.

So, by just looking at the name “Amparaiso”, we can immediately think of its meaning as the paradise in barangay Amparo.

You said Amparaiso don’t need your money, what does it mean?

Okay. I went to Amparaiso beach resort twice already: First during the birthday of my aunt last November 20, 2007; Second during our family (unofficial) reunion last December 9, 2007.

These two events are all memorable to me.

First during my aunt’s birthday, our Toyota Innova stuck on the sand at their parking area. To tell you, their parking area is not really good for cars to park. They better ask their architect for the improvement of it. Or they can visit the Kinamot restaurant and have a look at their parking area.

Secondly, during the 2nd time we went to Amparaiso beach resort I and our family really enjoyed their obsolete Videoke set. Few of the songs we entered were defective. I don’t know if their other customers complained about this.

And did you know that this morning my order were all denied by their store attendant? We liked their Calamari, Sweet and Sour (Fish), and Crispy Chicken. My aunt told me to order these but the man manning their store denied my order. It seems that they’re not interested to earn something from my orders.

Accidentally Fall for the First Time

In my 15 years of riding a motorcycle, yesterday’s accident was my first ever experience of falling from it.

I might be tired of driving the Toyota Innova from Malitbog, Southern Leyte to Ormoc city via Bato, Leyte then back to Malitbog from Ormoc, but then the accident was really due to the fault of the other guy involved with it.

Yesterday, after driving our family I immediately went to Liloan Ferry Terminal in Liloan, Southern Leyte to fetch my nephew who would be staying here in Malitbog, Southern Leyte on the rest of the days of the month of December 2007. On my way to the Ferry terminal, I was driving at the speed of 70KPH in a slightly curved highway near the Himay-angan crossing when a young man riding his bicycle suddenly turned left crossing my lane. I know I would hit him but I still tried to apply brake on both wheel. The motorcycle almost skids, but I managed to control it until I finally hit the pedal of the bicycle.

We are actually in a letter – T position during the impact. We’re just too lucky that the impact is not too heavy but it still threw us few meters away from the motorcycle and bicycle.

He stood up immediately and told me to get my motorcycle and check its damage. I then told them to forget about the motorcycle because all the damages of it can be repaired. Instead of thinking about anything else, I told them to check his body for any injury.

I can’t really believe that we both had no injuries, even scratches. But my Honda XRM motorcycle and his bicycle were all slightly damaged.

The young man asked apology from me. And I advised him to be careful and not to do the things he did. I also reminded him that the road he’s running was a highway not just an ordinary road, and that vehicles are normally running in high speed.

If what hit him was a 4-wheel vehicle, I wonder what will happen to him and where he is now.
