If you’ll ask someone an advice on how to drive motorcycle, the first thing you’ll hear is “wear crash helmet”.

I just couldn’t understand why most of the motorcycle riders don’t want to wear helmet when in fact wearing helmet will not only protect the motorcycle riders during fall out but also will help the rider from any disturbance in riding like wind, dust, insects and other objects that might hit you while riding.

Everytime I use my Honda XRM motorcycle, I always bring with me the helmet. Not just bring the helmet with me, I always wear it on my head not on my hands.

Besides, I make sure that the helmet that I bought and that I am using is the one that passed the standard quality. This kind of helmet might be expensive but it’s an assurance that the helmet will really help me during fall out.

I noticed that there are other motorcycle riders who wear substandard helmet just to comply with the requirements set by the law when riding motorcycle but rejecting the thought of saving themselves during accident.

I am planning to take an adventure trip with my new Honda XRM this coming week but because of some emergencies, maybe I will postpone it in June 2007. It will be the longest drive ever with the Honda XRM.

The adventure trip will start in Benit, Malitbog, Southern Leyte to Liloan, Southern Leyte. In Liloan, I be crossing the Surigao straight through on board with ferryboats from Liloan, Southern Leyte to Lipata, Surigao del Norte. Then from Lipata, the road drive will again start to Butuan City. I am planning to take a rest in Butuan City for one hour before starting the trip from Butuan City to our home town, San Agustin, Surigao del Sur.

I am not really sure how many Kilometers will I drive from Malitbog, Southern Leyte to San Agustin, Surigao del Sur. Malitbog to Liloan maybe has 80 Killometers distance. Surigao to Butuan has more or less 150 Kilometers. Butuan to San Agustin has more or less 250 Kilometers. So all in all will be more or less 480 Kilometers. So, if I can maintain the 60 Kilometers per hour speed, then I will be spending 8 hours riding the Honda XRM.

Currently, my Honda XRM spends 0.525 liters of Gasoline per 60 Kilometers or 0.00875 Liters of Gasoline per Kilometers. To complete the 480 Kilometers distance, I will be spending 4.2 Liters of Gasoline.

I will let you know if the plan will be final.

There are times that my new Honda XRM motorcycle is neglected. I forgot to wash it. Maybe in a week, I wash it just twice.

However, it might be true its cleanliness is not maintained, but I can’t afford to neglect its maintenance. During the break-in period, I changed engine oil when it reaches the first 500 kilometers mark, next when it reached the 1,000 kilometers mark.

When the mileage marked 2,000 I changed again the engine oil and brought it to the motorcycle mechanic for tune-up and check-up. Then after that, the schedule of the change oil will be during the time when the mileage marks every 1,000 kilometers.

As of writing this post, the mileage marked already its 4,000 kilometers travel. I already changed the engine oil and will bringing it again to the motorcycle engine mechanic for another tune-up process and check-up.

Just take a look at the photo below. That’s my dog, “Jurus” watching.

Okay, just for your information, I am using the Honda 4T motorcycle engine oil.

I better use the oil carrying the Honda brand just to be safe. I just don’t want to take the risk of using other engine oil although they have the same quality which are made for the 4-stroke engine motorcycle.

But not only the maintenance for the engine that I never missed to do. I also frequently apply chain oil for the chain. And I am using here the Singer oil.

I really want to use oil which is intended for the chain. But the mechanic said that it’s just fine to use the Singer oil.

So, everyday before I drive the motorcycle, I first check the chain and its looseness and then apply some oil for better lubrication and to lengthen the life of the chain and the chain’s gear.

This is to make sure that the motorcycle is safe to ride on, to avoid any accident.

Just want to remind you…. Learn to drive defensively.

For several days of using my new Honda XRM, I almost experienced accidents twice:

First last Wednesday when I was on my way home from Hinunangan. In Barangay Nahaong, Libagon, Southern Leyte I overrun a dog and I almost lost control of the motorcycle which was running at the speed of 60KPH during the incident. I really thanked God for saving me from that accident.

However, this afternoon, after my transaction at the Land Transportation Officer here in Maasin City I took the road in a hurry which led me to almost hit the coming passenger type Multicab. The driver shouted at me, cursing me. But I didn’t give him attention to avoid problems…

What’s the lesson here?

Avoid driving in hurry. You can drive faster but don’t drive fast because you’re in hurry. This is because if you’re in hurry, you’re mind will be filled of those things that made you in hurry and therefore can’t focus on your driving.

Before entering the road if you’re off the road, make sure that there’s no vehicle coming from any direction. Give way to those drivers who have the right of way.

Be ready on what emergencies you might encounter on the road. Practice defensive driving.

Reminder: Learn to Drive Defensively.
